Avera Research Institute Participating in a Study for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

SIOUX FALLS , SD (September 2007) – If you or someone you know is suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder; there may be a new method of treatment on the horizon. The Avera Research Institute is enrolling patients in a clinical study to measure the effectiveness and safety of an investigational medication in treating women diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

“This study will show how well the investigational medication works,” notes Dr. William Fuller, with Avera University Psychiatry Associates. “Currently, the medications used to treat patients suffering from GAD are only effective in controlling some of the symptoms associated with the disease.”

Women between the ages of 18 and 65 with a diagnosis of either moderate or severe GAD may be eligible to participate in the study. Those who qualify will receive all study-related care, at no cost, including physical examinations, laboratory evaluations, vital signs measurements, EKGs and study-related medication or placebo. After an initial screening period, qualified participants will be randomly assigned to one of three study groups: one group will receive the study medication; another group will receive an FDA-approved medication for GAD; and another group will receive a placebo, which contains no active ingredients.

Individuals with GAD have unfocused worry and anxiety that is not connected to recent stressful events, although it can be aggravated by certain situations. Common symptoms include feelings of threat, restlessness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and tension. More severe anxiety can show signs of palpitations, dry mouth and sweating.

Individuals interested in the study may contact Christi Hinker, RN, at (605) 322-3084 or toll-free at (888) 634-7268.
