Study Description: Randomized Phase 3b Study of Three Treatment Regimens in Subjects with Previously Untreated Multiple Myeloma Who Are Not Considered Candidates for High-Dose Chemotherapy and Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation: VELCADE® (Bortezomib), Thalidomide and Dexamethasone (VTD) versus VELCADE and Dexamethasone (VD) versus VELCADE, Melphalan and Prednisone (VMP)
Overview: The purpose of this clinical drug study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of three drug combinations in treating patients with multiple myeloma. Each of the individual study drugs making up the three combinations has been used to treat patients with multiple myeloma.
Participants in this study will be randomly assigned to one of three treatment study groups. Both the patients and their physicians will know what study medications are being administered throughout the study.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Men and women, age 18 and older
- Symptomatic multiple myeloma or asymptomatic multiple myeloma with related organ or tissue damage
Exclusion Criteria:
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant
- Prior or current treatment with any systemic therapy for multiple myeloma
- Radiation therapy within the past 2 weeks
- Major surgery within the past 30 days
