Study Description: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Parallel-Group Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of Tocilizumab (TCZ) versus Placebo in Combination with Methotrexate in Patients with Moderate to Severe Active Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Overview: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of an investigational medication used in treating patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This study is being done to see if the investigational medication can reduce the symptoms of RA when given together with methotrexate.
Participation in this study should last approximately 7 months. Volunteers in this study will receive the following, at no cost: physical examinations, vital signs measurements, EKG, and study-related medication or placebo.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Men and women, age 18 and older
- Diagnosis of active RA for longer than 6 months
- Receiving treatment on an outpatient basis
Exclusion Criteria:
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant
- Prior history of or current inflammatory joint disease other than RA
- History of alcohol, drug or chemical abuse within the past 6 months
- Major surgery, including joint surgery, within the past 8 weeks
