Smoking Study

Overview: This study will focus on determining the levels of cyanide and its metabolites in urine, saliva, plasma and red blood cells of both smokers and non-smokers.

An individual who smokes has increased levels of cyanide, which is inhaled from cigarettes. This study will investigate both the relationships and the differences between the levels of cyanide and its metabolites.

This study is looking for volunteers to fill two groups: smokers and non-smokers.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Males and females, age 18 and older
  • Cigarette smokers need to have smoked in the last 30 days and smoke an average of at least 5 cigarettes per day
  • Non-smokers need to have not used any form of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobaccos, nicotine gums and/or nicotine patches) in the last 12 months

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Women who are pregnant
  • Persons who are smokers but smoke less than 5 cigarettes per day
  • Persons who smoke, chew or burn any form of tobacco other than cigarettes
  • Persons using the medications Sodium nitroprusside or Lomotil
  • Persons currently or previously employed as firefighters, or in plastics processing, gold or silver mining, metallurgy or the tanning industry
