Wound & Ostomy Care

Floyd Valley Hospital offers specialized nursing care for persons with certain disorders of gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems.  WOC Nursing is a nursing specialty service that provides education, care and support for patients and caregivers with wounds, abdominal stomas and drains.  WOC nursing also assists with prevention of skin breakdown related to pressure, moisture, friction, diabetes and vascular insufficiency.

Services

  • Skin and Wound Care:
    • Identify patients at risk for skin breakdown
    • Recommend appropriate use of pressure redistribution equipment
    • Select appropriate skin care products
    • Initiate preventative skin care methods
    • Assess and document wound condition and stage
    • Recommend appropriate treatment plans
    • Serve as a resource for health care team
    • Educate patients, families about skin or wound care 
  • Ostomy Care:
    • Preoperative education and stoma site marking
    • Postoperative education related to activities of daily living with an ostomy
    • Selection and teaching about appropriate pouch techniques
    • Resource for updating ostomy equipment
    • Assess and treat peristomal skin conditions
    • Serve as a resource for health care team, patient, and family
  • Fistula Care:
    • Prevent skin breakdown
    • Select and contain body fluid discharge
    • Provide emotional support
  • Incontinence:
    • Recommend appropriate management, including product selection, odor control and treatment of skin care problems
    • Provide information, education, and referrals
