Twenty percent of Americans between the ages of 65 and 75 suffer from balance disorders. Dizziness and balance problems, coupled with the resulting falls associated with these problems, are the number one reason for physician's office visits in people 75 years and older. However, with the right care and treatment, a large percentage of these falls, which often lead to other health complications, can be prevented.
Until recently, many health care professionals have taken a traditional approach to the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders, in which only one specific component of the balance system was explored at a time. With this approach, many patients were faced with consulting multiple health care professionals before receiving accurate diagnosis.
The Avera McKennan Balance Center is the only facility of its kind in the region, and it represents a significant shift in the way care is delivered to balance impaired patients. Designed to treat complex balance disorders, the Balance Center team delivers comprehensive disease management through a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on specialists from otolaryngology, neurology, physiatry, audiology and rehab.
We identify, manage and treat patients with a balance deficits arising from a variety of causes. All of this adds up to a comprehensive center in which patients can receive complete diagnostic, evaluative and therapy services, all in one location.
