Caring for Residents with Mental Illness in the Nursing Home

The Purpose Of This Independent Study: At the completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to recognize behavioral symptoms of mental illness in nursing home residents and intervene appropriately.
- Name three interpersonal relationship skills that help mentally ill residents feel understood.
- Identify appropriate healthcare worker responses for two common symptoms exhibited with schizophrenia.
- Describe three nursing interventions for residents with bipolar disorder.
- Describe three interventions for residents with personality disorder who display manipulative behavior.
For successful completion of this continuing nursing education activity, participants must do all of the following:
- Watch the entire program.
- Successfully complete the post-test; passing score is 80%.
- Submit the completed evaluation form.
- Complete the electronic CNE Request.

Marci Pederson, RN, BSN, has 26 years experience in psychiatric nursing, including 10 years as Head Nurse in both acute care and psychiatric rehabilitation, 1+ year assessing nursing home residents for need for mental health services, and 15 years experience as Utilization Review Coordinator for psychiatric admissions. She also has 2 years experience as Director of Nursing Education for nursing students participating in an eight week psychiatric program, and 5+ years as educator for Avera Education and Staffing Solutions. All information presented in this continuing nursing education activity by Ms. Pederson has been done fairly and without bias.
