Getting an annual mammogram is for your health, but it's also for those who care about you. During Breast Cancer Awareness month, take a moment to schedule a mammogram that can give peace of mind to you and your loved ones.

One in eight women will have breast cancer in her lifetime. With early detection, breast cancer can be beat, which is why Avera is dedicated to getting you checked. An annual mammogram is recommended for women ages 40 and over or for women with a family history of breast cancer.

Call 1 (877) AT-AVERA (1 [877] 282-8372) to make an appointment for a mammogram.

InlineAvera provides compassionate care for cancer patients while using the latest medical technology during treatment. But Avera employees and volunteers, including some who have been personally affected by cancer, have become special advocates and a voice in the community for patients who are diagnosed with the disease.

Individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer or have had a family member diagnosed with cancer can empathize with cancer patients. Some go above and beyond their daily duties to bring cancer awareness to the community through advocacy, while others might work one-on-one with patients during treatment to offer extra support.

Some breast cancer survivors volunteer for Reach to Recovery, a program sponsored by the American Cancer Society that matches survivors with recently diagnosed patients. Other cancer survivors have joined community efforts to raise money for a cure. For example, a group of about 10 employees at Avera Marshall in Marshall, Minn., are ambassadors for Avera Marshall Race Against Breast Cancer, an annual event that raises money for mammograms.

While individuals who have personally been affected by cancer are an invaluable resource, your Avera regional center can help connect you with a supportive advocate at any point in your treatment. Contact your hospital's social worker for more information.
