Hunting for wild game is a popular sport during the fall and winter, and many hunters provide food for their families through hunting. Being aware of food safety during and after the hunt can help ensure that wild game is safe to eat.

Diseases can be spread from animals to humans, and this is especially true during field dressing when there aren't as many opportunities for hand washing. Contact with an animal's blood can put a person at risk for illness. Be sure to wear gloves, goggles and other protective gear when field dressing an animal. Disinfect tools and wash up as soon as possible.

After meat has been processed, handling it correctly is important. Keep all cooking surfaces and utensils clean, and keep raw meat separate from other ingredients. Cook meat thoroughly -- any meat that is undercooked can put people at risk for illness. Last of all, refrigerate any leftovers immediately.

Due to the widespread nature of the H1N1 flu, Avera is suggesting new visitor recommendations at emergency rooms, medical clinics and hospitals.

Avera, along with the other regional health systems, strongly recommends that visits to patients and residents are limited to only clergy and family members who are at least 18 years of age. People with any flu-like symptoms are asked to refrain from visiting until symptom-free.

When visiting emergency rooms or medical clinics, it is important to limit the number of persons accompanying those seeking care. Only those essential to the care of the patient should be in attendance.

Avera makes these recommendations in response to the H1N1 influenza pandemic. The flu has become widespread across the country, and modified visitor recommendations are advised to maintain a safe environment for patients, residents, guests and staff.
