Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) often plays a vital role in the treatment of patients with cancer. Frequently combined with other treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy, radiotherapy uses ionizing radiation – delivered either externally or internally – to control or kill cancer cells by permanently damaging their DNA. The challenge is to do this with the least possible damage to healthy tissues. Our Sioux Falls location offers a full range of radiotherapy technology:
External Beam Radiotherapy
External Beam Radiotherapy involves the treatment of cancer from the outside in with X-rays, gamma rays or electron beams. Treatments include image guided radiation therapy, (IGRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and total body irradiation.
Brachytherapy is a method for delivering radiation from the inside out using either a removable or implantable radioactive source. This includes high dose rate (HDR) and permanent seed brachytherapy. Because it involves directly placing a radioactive source in or near a tumor, brachytherapy provides a high level of treatment precision for certain types of cancer. And because the radiation stays so close to the treatment area, the chance of damaging the healthy surrounding tissue is low. Most brachytherapy patients have no major side effects. A private suite is dedicated to brachytherapy.

Elekta Versa HD™ Linear Accelerator
This powerful linear accelerator offers specialized capabilities, including stereotactic body radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and VMAT, which “wraps” the tumor with radiation dose using changing position and speed as beams sweep in arcs around the patient, providing faster delivery at an ideal dose while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues.
Careful, precise treatment planning maximizes the radiation dose inside tumors, while sparing the healthy tissue around them. To make the process easier and more effective, Avera Cancer Institute has invested in sophisticated treatment planning technology, including CT-based 3-D treatment planning and PET/CT treatment planning fusion.
Electron-based intraoperative radiation therapy is used in the treatment of early-stage breast cancer to shorten the course of follow-up radiation treatments after lumpectomy. For some women age 60 and older, IORT serves as a one-time treatment at the time of surgery. IORT also is used to treat certain gynecologic cancers and advanced cases of colorectal cancer.
