Multi Disciplinary IDS Dermatology Consultation

In February 2008, an infectious disease specialist (IDS) practicing in Sioux Falls was requested to consult via telemedicine with regards to an unexplained rash for a pediatric patient from a community located in northeastern South Dakota.

After the initial assessment the IDS felt that the input of a dermatologist would benefit this patient.

Knowing that dermatology also provided telemedicine services, the IDS physician inquired if a dermatologist might be available to consult while the child was still at the remote facility.

After a phone call to the dermatology clinic, the patient was connected via telemedicine for a consult by the dermatologist.

For this young patient with an unusual presentation, having timely access to specialty care via telemedicine in their home community enhanced the quality of care this patient received.
