The safety of our patients, staff and visitors at Avera Behavioral Health is one of the most important aspects of the care we offer. Safety design features and security measures include:

Entrances and Exits Safety

  • Security staff on duty 24 hours a day,
    7 days a week
  • Use of proximity card locks at all points of facility entrance
  • Facility entry door locking times are adjusted to regular work hours and staffing levels
  • Outdoor courtyards enclosed by decorative security fence that is designed to prevent climbing

Safety in Patient Rooms

  • Safety showerheads┬áin all patient bathrooms
  • Patient room window mini-blinds controlled by staff
  • Tamper-proof heating/air conditioning grills
  • Water temperature centrally controlled to prevent burns
  • Double-swing doors on all patient bedrooms to prevent barricading of rooms

Safety in All Areas

  • Security cameras with digital recording capabilities in areas of security concern
  • Day areas and patient rooms designed for maximum staff visibility of patients
  • All glass is safety glass or has added liner to prevent breakage
  • All staff carry a panic alarm that, when activated, notifies Security and all nursing stations of an emergency situation and identifies the location of the emergency
  • Tamper-proof light fixtures in all non-staffed patient areas
