Palliative Care Services

Palliative Medicine is a special kind of health care for people who are living with a life-threatening or chronic illness. The key focus of Palliative Medicine is to provide the best quality of life through ensuring comfort and dignity by using a comprehensive team approach in order to meet not only physical needs but also psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual needs. Goals of Palliative Medicine are pain control and symptom management for enhanced quality of life, as well as decision support and family support.

Avera McKennan Hospice provides a full continuum of care. Services available through Home Hospice take place within a 100-mile radius of Sioux Falls, in a variety of settings including the patient’s home, nursing facilities and assisted living facilities. When inpatient care is needed, the Dougherty Hospice House provides around-the-clock medical care in a setting that offers the warmth and security of home.
