Hammer Toe

This deformity happens when a toe bends downward. It usually affects the second toe and is most often caused by wearing narrow shoes that are too tight or short.

Symptoms

  • The middle toe joint bends down like a claw
  • A corn develops on the affected toe
  • Pain walking or wearing shoes

Treatment

  • Use of a splint
  • Change of footwear
  • Surgery can involve cutting or moving tendons and ligaments or fusing the bones on each side of the joint.
