Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is the tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, creating the arch. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of this tissue, usually occurring when the foot is overstretched or overused.

Symptoms

  • Pain and stiffness in the bottom of the heel. It is most intense in the morning, after standing or sitting, climbing stairs, or intense activity.
  • The bottom of the foot may ache or burn.

Treatment

  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and inflammation
  • Stretching
  • Heel splints to wear at night
  • Rest
  • Steroid shots
  • Boot cast
