Meniscus Tear

The meniscus is the cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber and can sometimes tear, commonly caused by twisting or over-flexing the knee joint.

Symptoms

  • Pop at time of injury
  • Pain in knee when walking
  • Locking of joint
  • Difficulty squatting
  • Swelling

Treatment

  • Crutches or a brace
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Ice
  • Physical therapy
  • Knee arthroscopy can repair damage
