Heading Back to School

It's school time again! There is a lot more to making sure your child starts school on the right foot than just buying him/her the latest backpack. Parents and caregivers need to be sure children have a good physical and emotional start to their school year. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Make sure the school and your child know how to reach you or another caregiver at all times.
  • Speak to the teacher if you suspect your child is having difficulty. You should let the teacher know your concern as soon as possible and develop those relationships early.
  • Pay attention to your child's anxiety. It is normal for children to be anxious about the new school year, but if after a few weeks your child is still anxious and apprehensive, bring this to the attention of his or her teacher.
  • Encourage your child to eat breakfast. Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast are more alert in class. Also, make sure your child eats a balanced, nutritious lunch and snacks.
  • Don't forget to make sure your child's immunizations are up-to-date. View the Recommended Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedule.
  • Tell the school nurse and teacher if your child receives medication on a regular basis. They will be administering the medicine during the day.
  • Check your child's head for signs of lice. Head lice needs to be treated with over-the-counter remedies.
  • Have your child's vision screened and hearing tested before school starts.

Your child will have a great year in school if you make sure the teacher understands all his/her specific needs. Just as your child may be overwhelmed by school the first couple of days, teachers can be as well.  You can really help your children by staying connected with both them and their teachers regarding these issues.
