Overview of Childbirth Education Classes

Prepared Childbirth eClass (online class)

This online class can be taken from the convenience of your home and includes all the information, including videos, printable handouts and practice sessions you need to prepare for your baby’s birth. It also includes a face-to-face class for a tour and the opportunity to practice positions, breathing, relaxation, massage and have your questions answered.

Prepared Childbirth Classes

These classes are designed to help:

  • Prepare the couple for labor
  • Prepare the couple for birth
  • The transition to parenthood
  • With baby care skills

Labor and delivery information as well as how to care for your newborn are all covered. You may choose between a 4 week (3 hours each evening) or a 6 week (2 hours each evening) class.  We present all the information you need as well as give you time to practice positions, breathing, relaxation, massage, and take a tour of the Women’s Center. You’ll also practice bathing, changing, swaddling, and soothing a crying baby.

Weekend Prepared Childbirth Class

This is an all-day Saturday Prepared Childbirth class. You get all the information from other childbirth classes but in a condensed amount of time. You will learn about:

  • The signs and stages of labor
  • Comfort measures to use during labor
  • Pain relief options
  • Information about cesarean section

You will have limited time for practicing breathing and relaxation. This class does not include information on breastfeeding or caring for your newborn.


This hypnobirthing class will teach you to trust your body and work with it by using guided imagery, visualization, and special breathing to have a safe and satisfying birth. This class is taught by a Certified HypnoBirthing instructor.

You will learn:

  • Techniques of deep relaxation
  • How to create your body’s own natural relaxant
  • Natural ways to your bring your body through labor
  • How you and your birthing companion can create a birthing environment that is calm, serene and joyful
  • How to use your natural birthing instincts to birth your baby in a way that most mirrors the way nature intended

Caring for Your Newborn

The Caring for Your Newborn class will give new parents the information they need to feel comfortable caring for their new baby. The class includes information on:

  • Newborn physical and behavior traits
  • Feeding options
  • What to do when baby cries
  • Bathing
  • Diapering
  • Circumcision care
  • Home safety issues
  • Care for mom after the baby is born

We also give information for how dads can be involved in caring for the new baby. This information is covered in the series of childbirth classes but not in the weekend or hypnobirthing class.


The breastfeeding class is a one-night class designed for those who are planning on breastfeeding as well as those who are undecided. Fathers/support persons are encouraged to attend. Topics covered include:

  • Health benefits of breast milk to mom and baby
  • Tips for success
  • Problem-solving aspects
  • Father's role
  • Breast pumps
  • Returning to work and breastfeeding

This class is taught by our Certified Lactation Consultants.

Early Pregnancy

The first few months of life are important to your developing baby. This class is designed to help you get your pregnancy and your baby off to a good start. Topics discussed include:

  • Growth and development of the fetus
  • Emotional and physical changes for mom
  • Nutritional needs and avoiding harmful substances
  • What to expect at your doctor appointments and what tests will be done
  • How partners can be involved in the pregnancy experience

This class should be taken in the early months of pregnancy.


This is a fun class designed to share ways in which grandparents can support and encourage new parents. Topics include:

  • Current birth options
  • Changes in baby care skills
  • Grandparents’ role
  • Fostering traditions
  • Long-distance grandparenting


Expectant mothers of twins, triplets or more face special challenges during pregnancy and childbirth as well as when caring for more than one baby at home. This class is designed to provide information and support to help expectant parents of multiple blessings. You and your partner are encouraged to attend this class before your fifth month of pregnancy.

New Baby in Our Family

This class helps big brothers and sisters prepare for the arrival of a new baby. Parents are required to attend this class with their children. The children will hear all about new babies, get a chance to diaper and feed a doll, hear what it will be like at home with a new baby and get a tour of the place where mommy will be when the baby is born. This class is best suited for children 2-10 years of age.


This class covers relaxation and breathing techniques for labor, comfort and coping measures, birth options and choices, and sibling adjustment for those couples who have already had at least one baby, or for blended families or those who just want a brief overview of labor!
