Todd Forkel Named South Dakota’s Grassroots Champion

Todd Forkel, regional president and CEO of Avera St. Luke’s in Aberdeen, has been honored as South Dakota’s 2013 Grassroots Champion, earning this special recognition from the state branch of the American Hospital Association.

Each year, the American Hospital Association recognizes the achievements of grassroots leaders with this prestigious award. One hospital leader from each state is honored for work in effectively delivering the hospital message to elected officials, helping broaden the base of community support for hospitals, and advocating tirelessly on behalf of patients, hospitals and communities. Forkel will be honored at the eighth annual “Breakfast of Champions” April 30 in Washington, D.C.

“I am honored and humbled to have received this recognition,” Forkel said. “Avera Health’s founding Sisters were first and foremost teachers. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be able to carry forward their legacy in this manner.”

Forkel started his career at Avera St. Luke’s as a radiology technologist, later serving as director of radiology and vice president of clinics. He also worked as director of radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and as senior vice president of operations for Essentia in Fargo, N.D. He returned to become Avera St. Luke’s president and CEO in late 2011. Forkel is a graduate of Aberdeen Central High School, Presentation College and Northern State University. He and his wife, Amy, have three children.
