This week marks National Hospital Week and National Nursing Home Week. We are paying tribute to the pride, professionalism and people of health care and long term care with the slogans “A Guiding Light for Changing Times” and “Team Care: Everyone Pitches In,” respectively. As most people are aware, these are changing times for health care. Avera Sacred Heart Hospital is following the trends and staying out in front of the changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act and the many other forces in health care, such as new technology and aspects of patient- and resident-centered care.
- Memorial Service Helps Remember Babies Lost

The annual memorial service and interment to remember babies lost through miscarriage and stillbirth, a gesture of caring from Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in cooperation with Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Aberdeen’s Riverside Cemetery, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at the cemetery, 1706 W. Melgaard Road.

- Health Forum in Aberdeen Examines Living Life with Mental Illness

Living with mental illness can be a big challenge, but creating awareness in the community about what is involved in recovery can be a big first step. A free health forum, “In Our Own Voice,” featuring speakers Lois Knoke and Sandy Peterson of Huron, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in Aberdeen at Avera St. Luke’s Education Center, 709 Sixth Ave. S.E. The presentation is a powerful, anti-stigma tool that hopes to change hearts, minds and attitudes about mental illness.
- Learn About Interactive Metronome, Reflex Integration Therapy

Do you have a child who’s having problems paying attention in school or at home, or have a family member who’s been diagnosed with stroke, a brain injury or Parkinson’s? It may be time to explore new options. Interactive Metronome (IM) therapy and reflex integration, offered at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, creates the possibility for better motor and cognitive skills. A free community health forum focusing on these therapies will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in Aberdeen at Avera State Street Medical Square, 105 S. State St.
