Family Medicine Clinic of Sibley, Iowa, joins Avera Medical Group

SIBLEY, Iowa (Dec. 20, 2010) – Family Medicine Clinic, LLP, of Sibley, Iowa, will become part of Avera Medical Group as of Jan. 1, 2011. The new name of the clinic will be Avera Medical Group, Sibley.

For decades, local physicians have provided medical care through Family Medicine Clinic as a partnership between participating physicians. In joining Avera Medical Group, the clinic becomes an owned facility of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center.

Family Medicine Clinic, LLP, has two physician owners, Douglas J. Miedema, DO, and Gregory J. Kosters, DO. In addition, the clinic employs one physician, Mark Taylor, DO; physician’s assistant Lori Letner, PA; and 14 additional employees.

The clinic provides primary care, family practice and obstetrical services. The clinic works closely with Osceola Community Hospital for support services such as laboratory and diagnostic imaging, and will continue to do so. Osceola Community Hospital is managed by Avera McKennan.

The decision to join Avera Medical Group arose primarily from the need to recruit and retain physicians in the midst of a national and regional shortage of family physicians, Dr. Miedema said. “The management relationship that Avera has with Osceola Community Hospital has been very positive and beneficial to our hospital and community over the past 15 years, so it was natural that we would have discussions with Avera,” he said. “Avera shares a similar philosophy regarding health care and mission.”

Patients should notice no visible change, Dr. Miedema said. “We will still have the same staff and physicians, and the practice will be managed in the way that it has. Avera will provide professional and administrative support that can only enhance the quality of care that we are already providing.”

“Avera specializes in the management of clinics in rural communities like Sibley, keeping quality care near home for residents. Through this relationship, we can assist with physician recruitment, and other management functions to help the clinic stay strong and viable well into the future,” said David Flicek, chief administrative officer of Avera Medical Group. “As a result, physicians can devote more of their time to the care of patients.”

“Family Medicine Clinic is a strong practice with experienced physicians and staff who serve the community of Sibley well, and we are proud to welcome them to the Avera family,” Flicek added.
