  • Community-Wide Sharps Program Started in Aberdeen

Be Sharps Smart!

Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, in cooperation with the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce Partners in Community Pride Committee and their AberGreen initiative, has established a community-wide program for the proper, legal, free disposal of household sharps.

Avera St. Luke’s Community Sharps Collection Kiosk

Located at 709 Sixth Avenue SE in Aberdeen, provides a convenient, easily accessible location where individuals may dispose of their household sharps any time, any day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How to Use the Community Sharps Collector Kiosk

  1. Place your sharps in a commercial sharps container. To fit in the kiosk, the container must be one gallon or less.
    • Do Not Use coffee or other steel cans, glass bottles or jars, aluminum cans, plastic tubs, buckets, milk jugs, soda bottles or bags.
    • Do Not bend or break sharps; or recap sharps, unless instructed otherwise.
  2. Community Sharps Disposal SiteTake your container to the Community Sharps Disposal site located at Avera St. Luke’s Education Center, 709 Sixth Avenue SE
  3. Pull handle of Sharps Collector Kiosk to fully open drop box drawer.
  4. Place sealed sharps container inside.
    • Do Not dispose of LOOSE sharps, needles, syringes or lancets. All materials should be in an approved sharps container.
    • Do Not dispose of old medicines, garbage, etc.
  5. Slowly close drop box drawer.

The Community Sharps Program is funded by Avera St. Luke’s Foundation and the voluntary donations of those who use or support the program.
