Cancer Survivors Invited to 'Awaken' Exercise Class

"Awaken" exercise class for cancer survivors is being offered at 2:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday afternoons in Aberdeen at Avera St. Luke's Therapy Center, 805 First Ave. SE. Vicki Holley, an American Council on Exercise (ACE) certified personal trainer with a Cancer Exercise Specialist advanced qualification, will lead the classes, which feature laughter yoga, deep breathing, stretching and strengthening, a ball workout/Theraband, and light chair aerobics.

The benefits of exercise during cancer treatment include increased stamina, function, strength and self-esteem; improved treatment tolerance; a decrease in pain and depression; fewer problems sleeping; and less fatigue during and after chemotherapy and radiation. Exercise also helps recovery from surgery, increasing strength and flexibility, improving posture and providing cardiovascular conditioning.

Four-week sessions will be held monthly; cost is $30. For more information, call 605-622-5979 or 605-622-5878.
