Avera Bulletin - February 2013

Roses … Just Because

Every year foundations throughout Avera provide the opportunity to buy beautiful roses. And while many of us just enjoy flowers, these roses do a double duty. Not only do they cheer up the recipient but they also help raise money for many different projects. Funds raised by each facility go towards different community projects including hospice care, local scholarships, AED (automated external defibrillator) placement in rural communities and equipment replacement in the hospitals, just to name a few.

Since 1996 this fundraiser has been selling a dozen roses for $20 but due to increased prices in flowers over the past 17 years, the price for a dozen roses is now $25. Roses went on sale Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 and orders can be placed through mid-March. Roses will be available mid-April. Last year more than 7,700 dozen roses were sold, raising more than $154,000.

State Awards Grants

Twenty-three rural hospitals in South Dakota will receive a total of $278,037 in federal funding. Eight Avera facilities will receive portions of those funds. These dollars will go towards multiple projects to improve patient access, reduce medication errors, reduce hospital readmissions and improve operations. The funding will help the rural facilities make direct, positive impacts on patient care and health outcomes.
