Avera Health Bulletin July 2012

Avera Most Wired Innovator and Most Wired

Avera’s eEmergency service has been recognized as a winner of one of only three Most Wired Innovator Awards given by Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) magazine. Three finalists for the distinction also were named. Coverage of the Most Wired Innovator Awards will be in the magazine’s August 2012 edition.

From a set of essays submitted separately from the Most Wired Award applications, a panel of hospital and information technology leaders blind judged the submissions to identify noteworthy projects and name the winners and finalists. Projects were evaluated on:

  • Achievement of business objective
  • Creativity and uniqueness
  • Scope of solution
  • Impact on the organization

In addition, on July 10, Avera was named one of the nation’s Most Wired health systems — once again the ONLY facility in the State of South Dakota to achieve the recognition. This is Avera’s 13th Most Wired Award. The information was released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) magazine.

Avera Heart Hospital Receives Accreditation

Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota has been granted a three-year term of accreditation in carotid stenting by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). Avera Heart Hospital is the fifth facility in the nation to receive this designation. The IAC grants accreditation only to those facilities found to have processes in place to ensure quality patient care in compliance with national standards.

Accreditation by the IAC means that Avera Heart Hospital has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts in the field of carotid stenting. The IAC’s comprehensive application process includes a detailed procedure review.

Avera St. Luke’s Rehab Center Accredited

Avera St. Luke’s Hospital Rehabilitation Center again has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for both its Inpatient Rehabilitation Program for adults and its Stroke Specialty Program. Both accreditations are for a three-year period that runs through May 2015.

The survey found many strengths. CARF accreditation includes passing a rigorous peer-review process and demonstrating during an onsite visit that programs and services are of the highest quality. CARF is an independent, not-for-profit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of people served.

Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center Bariatric Surgery Program Recognized

Avera McKennan’s bariatric surgery program has been granted “Full Approval” and will continue to be recognized as an American College of Surgeons Level 1 Accredited Bariatric Center by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This designation means that Avera McKennan has met the essential criteria that ensure it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric surgery care program and that its institutional performance meets the requirements outlined by the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program.

New Avera Medical Group Clinic to Open in Ipswich

Avera St. Luke’s Hospital will be opening a primary and specialty care clinic in Ipswich, S.D., in August. The clinic will be named Avera Medical Group Ipswich.

“The growing Avera Medical Group serves many patients from the Ipswich area, and we feel this clinic demonstrates our commitment to provide care near home for these patients,” says Todd Forkel, president and CEO of Avera St. Luke’s.

The remodeled clinic space is located at 501 Bloemendaal Drive, adjacent to the Hospitality Hotel. The clinic will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will offer medical services to people of all ages. Avera St. Luke’s is currently recruiting for a certified nurse practitioner or physician assistant to be the provider at the clinic. A physician from Avera Medical Group in Aberdeen also will see patients in the clinic on a regular basis.
