Avera St. Luke’s Registered Nurses Win Awards

Three Avera St. Luke’s registered nurses recently won awards at the South Dakota Nurses Association annual convention held in Brookings.

  • Barbara Goehring from Nursing Administration received the “Joy of Nursing” award.
  • Susan Fischer from Pediatrics was honored for her contributions to the nursing profession, named the district’s “Nurse of the Year” for the third time.
  • Monica Karpinske, a nurse case manager in Medical Care, received the “Nursing Practice Award.”

Goehring’s award recognized her work in organizing the first aid booth at the Brown County Fair for many years, mentoring nurses and nursing assistants, collaborative work with local schools and the Humane Society, and efforts in developing a cookbook with SDNA and Avera St. Luke’s that has sold more than 400 copies.

Fischer, who says pediatrics is her passion, has worked at Avera St. Luke’s for 43 years. She was recently presented with the Jacobs Nursing Practice Award for her clinical expertise, dedication and passion for nursing and for activities in her professional associations.

Karpinske, who’s worked at Avera St. Luke’s for 35 years, was recognized for development of educational programs, implementing processes for tracking Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) quality indicators, and work with the Care Transitions program.
