Breast Surgeon Dr. Julie Reiland joins Avera Medical Group  

SIOUX FALLS (Jan. 1, 2012) – Avera Medical Group is pleased to announce that Julie Reiland, MD, will join Avera Medical Group Comprehensive Breast Care as of Jan. 2, 2012.

Dr. Reiland specializes as a breast surgeon. She holds a medical degree from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine at Vermillion, and completed residencies at the Sanford School of Medicine and Creighton University Medical Center of Omaha. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

“Avera has developed a comprehensive breast health program in which a team of medical professionals are committed to finding the very best care option for each and every patient. Breast cancer is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ disease. It requires a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach, and this is Avera’s approach through the Avera Breast Center,” Dr. Reiland said. 

Dr. Reiland offers the latest surgical techniques, including oncoplasty, in which the surgeon not only removes the cancerous lump, but also uses plastic surgery techniques to restore the breast as much as possible, or even improve the appearance of the breast. Dr. Reiland is also a principal investigator in Avera’s groundbreaking research using IntraOperative Electron Radiation Therapy (IOeRT) in the treatment of early stage breast cancer. “Breast cancer treatment is very dynamic. There are excellent advancements coming out all the time,” Dr. Reiland said. “We hope to change the impact of breast cancer from a devastating, fearful diagnosis, to that of a very treatable condition. We’re getting closer to this all the time.”
