‘Road to Lifelong Health Begins with Breastfeeding’
Aug. 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week, with a theme of “The road to lifelong health begins with breastfeeding.” Supporting breastfeeding is crucial to the health of babies, their mothers and our society as a whole. Keeping breastfeeding high on the public health agenda is critical to improving global health.
This road to lifelong health is not one for mothers and babies to travel alone. “While breastfeeding is a learned behavior, it is important to remember that the journey to successful breastfeeding begins with support of families, health care providers, governments, employers and communities,” said Cathy Carothers, president of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).
Avera Breastfeeding Center at Avera St. Luke’s BirthPlace in Aberdeen is committed to supporting mothers breastfeeding as long as possible, for both the baby’s short-term and long-term health. Avera St. Luke’s has full-time lactation support for mothers and their babies. The hospital also supports employees who breastfeed and plan to return to work, and Avera St. Luke’s is the first in the Avera system to provide dedicated lactation rooms for employees.
