New Avera Dialysis Center Will Provide Expert and Seamless Care

SIOUX FALLS (Nov. 3, 2013) – A new outpatient dialysis center on the campus of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center will allow Avera to offer the full continuum of organ disease services, all in one location for the convenience of patients and their families.

Avera Dialysis Sioux Falls will be located in newly renovated space in Plaza 3, Suite 4000, and will be furnished with state-of-the-art equipment, including Crit-Line® technology and specially designed patient chairs with heat and massage. With 22 patient stations and 11,000 square feet, it’s the largest space dedicated to outpatient dialysis care in Sioux Falls, giving patients more scheduling options. Patients also will benefit from valet services and designated space in a parking ramp adjoining Plaza 3 by indoor skywalk.

In conjunction with the outpatient dialysis center, Avera will offer peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis care, with all the training and support from experienced staff that patients need for these types of care.

Plaza 3 is a centralized location for comprehensive organ disease services, including nephrology, liver disease, organ transplantation, endocrinology and diabetes care. Avera is home to the region’s longest-standing kidney transplant program, now in its 20th year. At Avera, patients with kidney disease have access to the full range of services, from expert specialty care in the clinic, to dialysis, to kidney transplantation.

In addition to kidney transplant, the Avera Transplant Institute offers the only pancreas and bone marrow transplant programs and center for liver disease in the state and surrounding region.

“Avera is extremely proud of our award-winning transplant services. For years, patients with advanced organ disease have been able to receive expert care, right here in Sioux Falls, instead of traveling to larger metropolitan areas. The addition of a new, state-of-the-art outpatient dialysis center is just one more benefit we can offer to patients with the diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease,” said Dr. Dave Kapaska, Regional President and CEO of Avera McKennan.

In the past, Avera McKennan has contracted with an independent company to provide outpatient dialysis on its campus.  Avera McKennan has operated its own inpatient dialysis center for a number of years, and operates numerous outpatient dialysis centers throughout the region.

“Avera patients will experience a greater continuity of care. Avera kidney specialists are located in the same building, and will be readily available for consults. In addition, patients can receive comprehensive lab services and diagnostic tests, all on the Avera McKennan campus,” said Beth Plahn, Director of the Avera Transplant Institute and Avera Dialysis Sioux Falls.

Insurance coverage also will be more seamless for those patients whose carriers prefer a comprehensive approach to kidney disease care.

“Avera McKennan looks forward to this expansion of our services,” Dr. Kapaska said. “Our dialysis patients will receive the highest quality of care, delivered with the compassion for which Avera is known.”
