Ultrasound at Avera Marshall Imaging Center
Avera Marshall uses the most advanced ultrasound imaging
equipment available, capable of 3D and 4D imaging. Advancement in ultrasound technology has led to 3D ultrasounds that convert sound wave data into 3D images. We now have 4D ultrasound, that is a 3D ultrasound image in real-time motion.
How to Prepare For Your Ultrasound
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses low energy sound waves beyond the human hearing range to create images of the inside of your body. Ultrasound images are captured in real-time, so they can show blood flow through the blood vessels and movement and structure of your body’s internal organs. It is also used to detect any changes in the function and appearance of organs or tissues.
Doppler Ultrasound
Doppler ultrasound measures the speed and direction of the blood cells within the blood vessels. It is a painless procedure that helps diagnose potential medical problems.
Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate symptoms like pain, swelling and infection. Doppler ultrasound images can help a doctor diagnose blood clots, blockage or change of blood flow and narrowing of vessels.
Echocardiography
Echocardiography is ultrasound imaging of the heart. It is an important exam that provides information about the valves, heart wall motion, and the efficiency of the heart’s pumping capability. Technologists also check for heart enlargement and fluid around the heart.
How Ultrasound is Used
Ultrasound can be performed on on many organs and tissues including:
- Appendix
- Bladder
- Blood vessels
- Carotid arteries
- Fetus
- Gallbladder
- Heart
- Kidney
|
- Liver
- Ovaries
- Pancreas
- Scrotum
- Spleen
- Thyroid
- Uterus

Ultrasound is used to guide procedures like needle biopsies. Special needles are used to extract samples of cells from an area of concern for evaluation.
