Matt Miller - Interview

Matt Miller“I’m drawn to the human figure and enjoy manipulating its form,” says sculptor Matt Miller. “C” was inspired by the human experience and struggles within relationships, particularly the emotional highs and lows experienced with both. “This piece speaks specifically about the inability to protect those we love, even if we want to or think we are protecting them.”

The sculpture, which is made out of wood and steel, is very typical of Miller’s work. “Each one of my pieces is a story inspired by an event, unfortunately mostly traumatic, with a lot of impact,” he says. “I feel I need to speak about it, but prefer not to do so through words. It’s almost like a form of self-therapy.”

Miller, a native of Cape Girardeau, Mo., received his B.S. from Southwest Missouri State University with a major in Art Education and his M.A. in Art Education. “I think I’ve been sculpting since I was a little kid,” he says. “I used to make my own toys to play with. It appears that inventive spirit has been in me forever.”
