Jacque Frazee - Interview

Jacque FrazeeJacque Frazee, a native of Milbank, SD, practices a unique method of art. His style consists of collecting discarded scraps of metal, and repurposing them in beautiful pieces. “My inspiration for this piece came from a box of square nails,” he says. “I did not see them as nails but as fish bones. My wife often tells me I am like a kid in a candy shop when I am in a junk or scrap yard. I guess I just really enjoy the challenge of creating something out of other people’s junk.”

“Fish,” which stands two feet tall and is 16 inches wide, is typical of Frazee’s work. It is of an animal and it’s made from all recycled materials. “My work is typically plant or animal and nature,” he says. “However, recently I have been making more mechanical and abstract pieces.”

Frazee takes great pride in the dedication he renders to each sculpture, and strives to create pieces projecting his creative expression. He hopes viewers at Avera McKennan will see how much of himself he puts into each of the sculptures he creates. “Sculpting makes me happy and I am doing what I love to do,” he says. “There is a part of me in every project, and my work depicts me in that I pour my whole self into each sculpture. Therefore, I hope all the viewers will experience the heart and soul I try to blend in with each piece.”
