Nathan Pierce - Interview

Nathan PierceNathan Pierce, the sculptor behind “River #11,” grew up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The town’s close proximity to the Mississippi River has always served as inspiration for Pierce. “It’s hard to not be inspired or influenced by water when you grow up in a Mississippi River town like Cape Girardeau,” he says.

“River #11,” constructed of wood and steel, took Pierce several months to create. The sculpture, which stands 32 inches tall, was inspired by the Mississippi River as well as personal relationships. “Although I’m inspired by the river, I typically use that as a means or a vehicle to communicate significant events in my life. Whether it is re-creating a memory of a place that I’ve been or how a person has affected me.”

Pierce went to Southeast Missouri State University and received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree. He’s been sculpting professionally for nearly five years.

Pierce hopes people will see “River #11” and be inspired by personal growth and change. “I’m deeply influenced by relationships and the struggles that come with those relationships,” he says. “I find it inspiring to explore and understand the hardships that come with dealing with other people because I believe it is my responsibility to become a better person.”
