Sherrill Stone - Interview
A native of Northern California, sculptor Sherrill Stone currently resides in Colorado and uses the natural features around her as inspiration for her work. From an early age, Stone has always been motivated to create. Stone’s unique ability to be influenced by a wide array of matter allows for her to see a sculpture taking shape long before she conceives it.
Stone believes that spirit governs her work and feels while sculpting, her hands are guided by a higher power until the finished piece emerges. Much of her inspiration is based on how she sees a natural object crafted into something more pleasing to the eye. Of all the mediums Stone has worked in, sculpting stone gives her the greatest joy. Stone believes there is a softness within the hardness of rock. “There is a gracefulness within the power of the stone and I thrive on the excitement of this counterpoint in my work.”
Stone aims to express what sometimes is not easy for her to express in words. “It is that inside of me that must be expressed in three-dimensional form-all the emotions and feelings that I feel.” Stone draws inspiration from many sources including the workings of Gianlorenzo Bernini and Auguste Rodin.
“Naissance D’or” is constructed completely of bronze and stands 18.5” tall. Stone has always been interested in the female form and used this piece to express her artistic passion. “I like exaggerating the form toward the maternal. Large hips for carrying the child, graceful movement in the head and neck evoking emotion and arms turning into wings, as in the freedom to fly.”
With this piece Stone hopes viewers are filled with a sense of peace and beauty.
