On September 3, 2011, Darla Jacobson, a young mother and wife, passed away from cancer at the Dougherty Hospice House. She was 36 years old. For Darla's mother, Kathy, she remembers the sense of calm that the caregivers provided her and her daughter during her last weeks.
"I knew how to touch her to relax her. and I could focus on that because the caregivers tended to her pain pump and limited mobility. She was my child. She and I had a connection. The caregivers at hospice were angels. I was able to be with her through the end and can't say enough about the support, both physically and spiritually, we received from hospice care," adds Kathy.
In 2006, Darla initially received the devastating diganosis of breast cancer. Despite being aggressive with her treatment, a recurrence in 2008 led to the cancer spreading to her bones. Determined to live life to the fullest, Darla's positive attitude and strong faith was an inspiration to many, some of whom had never met this very courageous woman.
But the New Year brought many challenges for Darla, her husband Jon and young daughter Cait as her cancer became very aggressive. Although multiple surgeries may have weakened her body, nothing could weaken her spirit. With a love for the simple things -- a cup of coffee, a shopping trip for shoes, a day with her beloved daughter -- Darla continued her journey with bravery.
Her mother Kathy remained by her side throughout her diagnosis accompanying her to every doctor's appointment, treatment and procedure. But she welcomed the assistance of hospice care when her daughter's illness became too complex to treat.
"When hospice stepped in, I didn't have to worry. I knew my daughter was getting great care which was a huge relief. I'm so grateful for the Doughtery Hospice House and its team of caregivers. They gave us a place to gather and grieve. The beautiful surroundings, private family areas and outside gardens provided a sense of calm. Darla would have appreciated its beauty," adds Kathy. "We miss Darla so much and think of her all the time. You never imagine losing a child."
