St. Isidore Centennial Garden

Gardening season is in full swing at St. Isidore Centennial Garden!

Avera McKennan has tilled just over 60 garden plots at Cliff Avenue and 21st Street, which are being tended by Avera McKennan employees throughout the growing season. Gardeners get their own 8-by-20-foot space, free of charge, to plant fruit or vegetables. We thank the Avera employees and their families who have chosen to work a garden spot in St. Isidore Centennial Garden.

St. Isidore the Farmer is the patron of farming and rural communities. Born in 1070 to poor Catholic parents in Madrid, Spain, he worked as a farm laborer his entire life, rising early each day to attend Mass, and then communicating with God throughout the day as he worked the soil.

As Avera McKennan celebrates our centennial year in 2011, we take pride in our own farming heritage in South Dakota. The Presentation Sisters, early sponsors of Avera McKennan, grew their own fresh produce on St. Isidore’s Farm in Aberdeen, and St. Rita’s Farm in Sioux Falls.

As did St. Isidore the Farmer, we hope Avera employees will find spiritual peace and fulfillment in working the soil. We encourage gardeners to share the fruits of their labor to benefit others, through organizations like the Good Shepherd Center, St. Francis House, the Banquet, the Walsh Family Village, Avera Prince of Peace and Dougherty Hospice House.

LifeCare, Avera McKennan’s worksite wellness program, is the proud departmental sponsor of this event. The garden provides employees with the opportunity to engage in gardening activities which help promote emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Learn more about Avera's wellness services.

Happy gardening!
