Avera Family Wellness Program
This innovative program is enriching the lives of children TODAY, and possibly paving the way for new treatment and prevention strategies in the FUTURE.
In cooperation with the Sioux Falls School District, children enrolled in early childhood Head Start and Title I programs at Garfield Elementary School and their families are participating in the Avera Family Wellness Program on a completely voluntary basis.
At no cost, families take part in wellness activities and family coaching. Research indicates that music, dance and drama can positively impact brain development to enhance learning, as well as emotional and social growth. So children are involved four days a week in violin lessons, mind-body activities, and expressive therapies such as drama and storytelling. Family health coaches provide structure, accountability, expertise and inspiration to help parents to learn, grow and develop.
As an applied research project, tracking a control group of children provides a basis for comparison. A unique aspect of Avera Family Wellness is the collaboration between Avera, the Sioux Falls Public Schools, South Dakota Symphony and other community partners.
