Diabetes Programs

We offer outpatient services including our diabetes and pregnancy program and support/outreach groups.

Diabetes Self-Management Program

Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center's Diabetes Self-Management Program has been nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association for providing quality education since 1988. We offer individual group classes consultation sessions scheduled to meet your needs and provide you with the information necessary to successfully manage your diabetes. Topics include nutrition, medications, exercise, blood glucose monitoring and more.

Diabetes and Pregnancy Program

This program is designed for women with preexisting or gestational diabetes. Our team will provide support and monitor your progress through the entire pregnancy process. Find out more about our pregnancy program and gestational diabetes.

Diabetes Support Groups

These groups are free and provide an opportunity for people to help each other learn to live more successfully with diabetes. To find out more, look at our diabetes support groups.

Diabetes FITness Program

Our fitness program will provide you with fun ways to exercise and improve your blood sugar through teamwork with other diabetics and our FITness staff. The program is located at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center.

Individual exercise routines are developed based on your interests and fitness abilities. Activities may include walking, biking and flexibility exercises. We will check your blood sugars before and after exercise to track and improve your workout routine.

Health Professional Outreach/Support

Our Diabetes Center staff is available to provide continuing education programs at your facility. Programs are customized to meet the needs of your institution. Consultation services on diabetes education program development and clinical diabetes care issues are also available.
