The Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center Laboratory is a College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited facility serving Avera McKennan and the entire three state region surrounding the Sioux Falls area. Avera McKennan Laboratory has begun the development of South Dakota’s first and only Histocompatibility Laboratory for Transplant Testing. It is anticipated that the accredited laboratory will open by the 3
rd quarter of 2012.
Avera McKennan Laboratory is the first hospital laboratory in the United States to achieve Accreditation to the gold standard ISO-15189 Quality and Competence international standard in both Clinical and Anatomic Pathology;
and now the first laboratory of any kind in the United States to be re-accredited for a second cycle; it stands alone in terms of independent recognition of the highest quality and competence in its field.

Avera McKennan laboratory is highly recognized nationally and internationally for its scientific excellence and quality as well as its efficiency. It was selected as the Medical Laboratory Observer 2010 Laboratory of the year.The first hospital laboratory in the United States to achieve Accreditation to the gold standard ISO-15189 Quality and Competence international standard in both Clinical and Anatomic Pathology; it stands alone in terms of independent recognition of the highest quality and competence in its field. Avera McKennan Laboratory is also accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and is an FDA licensed blood bank. It is registered and licensed under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) in accordance with Medicare requirements.
