Microbiology

The Microbiology section of the laboratory consists of multiple facets and disciplines. In addition to routine aerobic and anaerobic cultures and antibiotic susceptibility; this area performs automated blood cultures, fungal cultures, acid fast cultures, viral cultures, and complete parasite examinations. The staff in this area combines to provide over 100 years of experience in specialized and routine microbiology testing.

The routine aerobic and anaerobic section is the largest volume area of the Microbiology laboratory processing over 40,000 of these cultures processed every year. Additionally, over 15,000 blood cultures, 2,500 fungal cultures, 2,000 acid fast cultures, 1,900 viral cultures and 1,200 parasitology exams performed each year. Approximately 60% of the testing is done on client collected specimens through Avera Mckennan Regional Laboratory.

The Microbiology section consists of 3 full time microbiologists and three medical laboratory scientists specialized in microbiology and virology. An additional four medical laboratory scientists are cross trained to work in microbiology in addition to rotating through the Core Laboratory section. There is a medical laboratory scientist available 24/7.
