Facts About Breast Cancer and Detection

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in life. At this time there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, but every woman can take steps to lower her risk. No matter your age, take action to protect your breast health!

  • Engage in routine breast health screening.
Monthly self-breast exams, yearly clinical breast exams and if over 40, yearly mammograms.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
Obesity increases the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer, as does weight gain during adulthood.
  • Engage in moderate exercise daily.
Studies show that regular physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer. The Averican Cancer Society recommends you exercise 45-60 minutes five or more days a week.
  • Reduce alcohol intake.
Alcohol is consistently associated with increased breast cancer risk. Analysis of over 40 studies suggests that 2 drinks a day (regardless of type) may increase breast cancer risk.
  • Discuss lifestyle choices with your health care provider.
Hormone Replacement Therapy - If considering the use of hormone therapy, discuss the risks and benefits with your health care provider.
