Avera Announces State’s First Free-Standing Emergency Department

SIOUX FALLS (Sept. 7 2015)– Avera announces plans to break ground on a new primary care clinic that includes the state’s first free-standing emergency department.

The new emergency department will be part of a three-story, 70,000-square-foot Avera Family Medical Center, to be located at 28th Street and Marion Road. It will also offer a complete continuum of primary care: family practice, internal medicine, OB/GYN and pediatrics, as well as an Avera Breast Center location, behavioral health counseling, lab and radiology.

The ED at this location will be equipped very similarly to a hospital emergency room, complete with enhanced imaging services and CT for fast diagnosis of conditions like stroke. The ED will be staffed with a physician, nurses and care team 24/7/365.

In addition to caring for illnesses like severe abdominal pain – a top reason for seeking emergency care – and injuries such as lacerations or broken bones, this ED will be able to stabilize patients who present with critical symptoms. Like other Avera emergency rooms, it will have 24/7 support of Avera eCARE™ eEmergency telemedicine services. Billing will be similar to a hospital emergency room.

Avera plans to break ground later this fall, with completion planned for late summer of 2016.

“The driving force behind our new Avera Family Medical Centers is to increase accessibility to medical care as our city’s population grows,” said Dave Kapaska, DO, President and CEO of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center.

West of I-29, there is a population of roughly 45,000 without nearby access to an emergency room. This ED will be able to handle all cases that a hospital ED would handle, and would triage and transfer any cases requiring greater needs, for example, trauma surgery, and intervention for heart attack, stroke, etc.

Similar to cases that are transferred between Avera McKennan and the Avera Heart Hospital, ambulance transfers between the 28th and Marion ED and Avera McKennan or Avera Heart Hospital will be covered by Avera.

This clinic is a completely new addition to Avera Medical Group offerings; Avera plans to keep all its other primary care clinics open and operational, including the existing McGreevy clinic on West 41st Street.

Avera Medical Group clinic visits in Sioux Falls totaled over 607,000 during the last fiscal year, or a monthly average of 50,600. On the west side of the city, the Avera Medical Group clinic on West 41st Street had nearly 38,000 visits in the past year, or a monthly average of more than 3,100.

“We want our entire city and service area to have quick, convenient access to a full range of health care. Through our Avera Family Medical Centers, we are grouping those services that are sought out by most patients on most occasions – and that includes 24-hour care for urgent or emergent conditions. We’re excited to unveil this new concept for the first time ever in west Sioux Falls,” said David Flicek, Chief Administrative Officer of Avera Medical Group.
