Avera Opens West-Side Family Health Center and Freestanding Emergency Department
Avera Medical Group Family Health Center, home to South Dakota’s first freestanding Emergency Department and a wide scope of other medical services, opens Oct. 12.
The public is invited to an open house from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9.
The 84,000-square-foot building, located at 2100 S. Marion Road, will include family medicine, urgent care, optometry, occupational medicine, therapy, case/social workers, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and an Avera Breast Center with mammography services. Onsite lab and imaging services, including X-ray and CT, also will be in the building. An AveraNow kiosk offers another cost-effective option for patients.
The main floor, which includes the Emergency Department, urgent care, radiology/imaging, lab, occupational medicine, therapy and eye care, is first to open Oct. 12. Second floor, which offers family practice, pediatrics and behavioral health counseling, will open in December, and third floor, home to OB/GYN and the Avera Breast Center with 3-D mammography, opens in January.
The emergency department will be staffed 24/7 with the same residency-trained emergency physicians who staff the ED at Avera McKennan and will also be connected to Avera eCARE™ eEmergency for additional support when necessary. If patients need more specialized care or need to be admitted to the hospital, they will be stabilized on site and transferred by ambulance to the appropriate Avera facility at no extra cost.
The clinics will be staffed by more than a dozen Avera Medical Group physicians and advanced practice providers.
The clinics and emergency department will be staffed by about 100 full-time equivalent positions, including about 50 who will move into the building from the Avera Medical Group McGreevy West 41st Street location and from the Avera McKennan campus. The 41st Street building will be available for other Avera services, and that decision is now under consideration.
“Almost one-third of the city lives west of I-29 and this will provide more services closer to their homes,” said Mark Vortherms, Vice President of Primary Care at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. “Avera Medical Group Family Health Center will be a neighborhood clinic, a freestanding emergency department and a complete community-focused medical center all in one that can help everyone from expecting parents to workers hurt on the job.”
