Goal

Our goal is to educate the region on the importance of cancer prevention and early detection. Our screenings help detect cancer in its earliest stage.

About Our Facility

  • The Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center is connected to the north side of the Hospital.
  • Bonnie Hoffman, RN, helps educate patients about radiation treatments and evaluates patients during radiation treatments.
  • Receptionist Brenda Rew greets Cancer Center patients and their families.
  • Eight comfortable, reclining chemotherapy administration chairs are located in a pleasant, well-lit area. A comfortable companion chair, television and VCR are also located in this unit of the Cancer Center.
  • Chemotherapy treatments are prepared at the Cancer Center.
  • Tumor Registrar, Cheri Feterl, RHIA, CTR, abstracts cases to help evaluate treatments, track trends, initiate studies and allocate cancer care services. Data is submitted to the South Dakota Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Data Base.
  • The GE multi-slice CT simulator is one of the advancing technologies used to create custom, individualized treatment plans.
  • Stephen Dick, MD, MPH, is the Radiation Oncologist on staff at the Cancer Center.
  • Anwarul Haq, MD, Hematologist/Oncologist, provides medical oncology at the Cancer Center and outreach consultation and follow-up services in surrounding communities.
  • Dosimetrist, Jennifer Jacks, MA RT (T), CMD, uses an ADAC Pinnacle 3-D treatment planning computer to create an optimal treatment plan based on results of the CT Simulator.
  • Mary Hohn is the receptionist for Medical Oncology at the Cancer Center.
  • Paula Schmidt, CMA (AAMA), is the office manager for Dr. Haq.
  • Patients may change into treatment attire in a private room attached to this patient waiting area.
  • A spacious waiting area, complete with lots of windows, refreshments, television and reading materials is located in the Cancer Center lobby.

The 10,000 square foot Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center, adjoins Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. The $3.5 million facility provides up-to-date radiation oncology and medical oncology to a 19-county region, allowing patients and their families to stay closer to home during treatment for cancer. In 2004, the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center was recognized by the Commission on Cancer for the American College of Surgeons as offering Best in Cancer Care and received the Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2007, the Cancer Center received Accreditation with Commendations from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

The Cancer Center staff includes two medical physicians who specialize in Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, as well as additional professional staff who provide personal and caring services. Located adjacent to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, the Cancer Center makes the resources of an entire health care system available. Our philosophy of comprehensive cancer care means that every necessary medical resource will be utilized to help patients return to health. This integration of services and technologies enables our Cancer Care team to provide a wider range of treatment options, right here in Mitchell.
