Wanda Plummer
Wanda Plummer was a young 83-year old, outgoing and independent, who enjoyed golfing, bowling, gambling, traveling, and she especially loved coffee! Most of all, she cherished her time with her three daughters, Dawn and husband Gary Johnson, Karn (now deceased) and husband Mike Wynia, and Rexanne and husband Dave Thuringer. According to Rexanne, “We always looked forward to our ‘girls weekend’ every spring and fall. We loved our time with her!”
Peace of Mind
But time ran out for Wanda; she lost her battle to cancer on March 23, 2012. “Mom was adamant that she did not want us girls to have the burden of taking care of her during her final days,” said Rexanne. “Mom suggested Hospice, and we were relieved to know that we would have help, and that Mom would have peace of mind, and be able to live the end of her life with dignity.”
According to Rexanne, “Avera Hospice Mitchell was such a blessing to Dawn and me as we were able to be with her every day, knowing we had the help of the experts when needed.
Hospice Brought Us Together
Without Hospice, we couldn’t have considered bringing Mom home and, if it is possible, having Mom home with us during her last days brought our family even closer together.”
Wanda Plummer’s family says, “Her caregivers were nothing short of incredible – and in addition to caring for Mom, they were our support group.” Katina Tucker was the nurse who worked with Wanda and her family. According to Katina, “As a Hospice nurse, it is truly an honor to help patients and their families to cope with transition through that final stage of life. I became close with Wanda and her family, and I share their loss even to this day.”
Making the Last Days Comfortable
Hospice is available to all individuals of all ages, from all walks of life – regardless of financial situations. The goal of the Hospice team is to make the last days of the patient’s life as comfortable as possible while supporting the family. Saying goodbye to a loved one is hard, and the experienced and compassionate Avera Hospice Mitchell team, with years of experience, was able to provide that special care and support for patients and their families.
*This event brings smiles to the faces of our patients and clients who benefit from this fundraiser, and with our costs having increased over 30% since 1996, it was time for a price increase. Our hope is that this increase will allow us to do even more to improve the care we are able to provide our patients and clients.
