Continuing with our "Get to Know" team interviews, the next individual to be highlighted is Registered Nurse, Bev.
Bev grew up within 50 miles of Mitchell in a rural, eastern South Dakota town. After high school Bev attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls and pursued her RN degree. Bev has RN experience in nursing home, hospital surgical unit, family practice clinic, and occupational medicine.
Bev has been with Avera Occupational Medicine since 2003 and works primarily in the Occupational Medicine Clinic.
Bev enjoys the field of Occupational Medicine because of the diverse specialty services that are offered. She says, “We offer services such as aviation physicals, which can only be performed by authorized physicians.”
Bev also notes that when she went to school she doesn’t remember much focus being on the practice of Occupational Medicine, but now that she has been working in the field, she sees the value it gives to companies. She says "Companies benefit from the services provided by Occupational Medicine. Screening applicants prior to hire ensures that applicants can do the work for the position that is offered. On the flip side when an employee does get injured we focus on returning the employee back to work quickly and safely."
Seventeen years ago Bev married her high school sweetheart and together they have 3 children, 2 boys and a girl.
Get To Know Bev...
What is your favorite food?
Anything Mexican will do; I love tacos, fajitas and guacamole.
If you do volunteer work; tell us a little bit about what you do and why.
I volunteer at my church and mostly at my kid’s school. I enjoy volunteering at school because I get to know the kids, teachers, my kid’s friends and other parents. It creates a sense of “family.”
What keeps you going during the day?
Nothing special – I might have an occasional coffee with amaretto or a Diet Coke.
I enjoy scrapbooking when time allows, mostly when the boys are out hunting.
What would be your dream vacation?
We have taken several family vacations and what I enjoy most is to see my kids fascinated and thrilled by something they see or have done. So I guess for me, a dream vacation can be any place we are as a family because we are making memories together that we will have forever.
M & M’s or Skittles?
Neither, I will choose Hot Tamales EVERY TIME.
Would you rather sleep in an extra hour or watch the news in the morning?
I choose sleep; I can always catch up on the news later.
Who drinks the most caffeine in the office?
Maybe Doctor Edinger? I know she likes her Coke every afternoon.
Who has the worse music taste in the office?
I guess I’ll go with the majority on this one and vote, Annie. But, secretly the 80’s music brings back fun memories!
Muffins or pancakes?
Either is fine, but they both need my homemade Maple syrup!
What do you do on Saturdays?
I usually spend my Saturdays at home – usually doing laundry, cleaning, or baking – getting caught up from the week.
Favorite place to eat in Sioux Falls/Mitchell?
No favorite; going out to eat anywhere is always a treat.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Organized, honest and reliable.
I am not a big movie watcher. Actually, I can watch a movie one night, watch it again the next and not remember what happened the first time I watched it. I guess I just don’t pay attention.
What do you like best about working for Avera Occupational Medicine?
I enjoy the diversity. I work primarily in the clinic and have the opportunity to see patients at pre-employment and post-accident, but on occasion I get the chance to help with Outreachand see clients in their work settings and get to take part with the prevention and wellness aspects. I love that Occupational Medicine offers many specialties that you don’t find in other area clinics.
