Certified Nurse Practitioner
Today's edition of "Get to Know" in the spotlight turns to Penny Petersen, one of the Avera Occupational Medicine's outstanding Providers.
Penny, was born in Dell Rapids, SD and graduated from Mitchell High School She then attended DWU where she earned a four year Psych degree followed by obtaining her nursing degree at the University of Phoenix. She then spent the next four years working as a nurse in Denver, CO, before joining the Air Force. She was stationed in many places and in serveral different occupations during her military career, including OB/GYN nurse, flight nurse and a deployment in Desert Storm. She finished up her military career in Arizona where she earned her master's and her Nurse Practitioner degree.
Twenty years later she "retired" back to Mitchell and eventually joined the Avera Occupational Medicine Team as a part-time Provider for patient care.
In her spare time, Penny enjoys most sports including snow skiing, hiking, and travel. She also breeds, raises and shows horses and has qualified for the World Finals every year!

What is your favorite food?
Any kind of Seafood
If you do volunteer work; tell us a little bit about what you do and why.
I volunteer with 4-H (Equine).
What keeps you going during the day?
Activity, I like to keep busy.
Snow skiing, travel, hiking, equestrian activities.
If you could have any pet, what would it be?
I always thought having a Chincilla would be fun or one those little flying squirrels. But I can't imagine not having a horse, I've always had one.
What would be your dream vacation?
I'd like to visit some of the South American countries like Brazil or Argentina

Most definitely M&M's, any kind
You are leaving the airport and there is a taxi and a limo both at the same price. Which do you choose?
I definitely take the limo!
Would you rather sleep in an extra hour or watch the news in the morning?
Watch the news, I feel like I'm missing something if I miss the news. I like to know what's going on in the world.
Who drink the most caffeine in the office?
It's a toss up, probably LaVonne but Jen or Janel may be right in there.
Who has the worst taste in music in the office?
Hmmmmm, can't really answer that because I listen to whatever radio station my office mates turn on.
What do you do on Saturdays?
Horse shows or ride in general, farm stuff.
Muffins or Pancakes?
Blueberry or Lemon Poppy Seed muffins.
Favorite place to eat?
Chef Louies in Mitchell, but there are several places in Sioux Falls.

Honest, hardworking and loyal.
What do you like best about working for Avera Occupational Medicine-Mitchell?
