Breast Cancer Collaborative Registry

Individuals who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, have a history of breast cancer, are at high risk of developing breast cancer are eligible to participate in the Breast Cancer Collaborative Registry (BCCR) project.

Participants answer questions about their medical history, diet, lifestyle habits, environmental exposures and family history, while their physicians provide information about their treatments. In conjunction with the medical database, the development of a blood and tissue biospecimen bank has been established to use a resource for future research studies.

This project is being done in partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Eppley Cancer Center. Click here to learn more about the Eppley Cancer Center.

Project Goals

Information collected will be stored on a web-based registry, known as the breast cancer collaborative registry (BCCR). By providing your health information collected in the questionnaires of this registry, researchers will study the factors that influence the risk of developing breast cancer as well as the prognosis and quality of life of breast cancer patients.

Researchers may also identify individuals who might benefit from screening measures to detect breast cancer at an earlier and potentially more treatable stage.

Blood and tissue samples will be stored for use in future research studies. Breast cancer researchers from the Avera Research Institute and UNMC/The Nebraska Medical Center/Eppley Cancer Center are currently involved in this study.

UNMC/Eppley Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center.

Project Eligibility

Individuals who are at least 19 years old and are willing to provide informed consent may be eligible to participate in this breast cancer registry if they meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals (male and female) who have a personal diagnosis or history of breast cancer; or
  • Individuals who have characteristics of hereditary breast cancer or who have an increased risk of breast cancer; or
  • Individuals who have an immediate family member who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Information and Consent

This is a research study. If you are interested and you qualify for the study, you will be asked to sign a consent form. (Click here to read the informed consent document.) Feel free to discuss this study with your family and friends.

Contact Information

If you or someone you know would be interested in participating in this breast cancer registry, please contact Heidi Demuth, RN, at either (605) 322-3295 or

The BCCR is committed to protecting each individual's confidentiality and privacy. Only patients--using their own user ID and password--and the Eppley Cancer Center research team have access to the medical data. The participant's personal identification is replaced with a medical code number. Security issues are addressed using recommendations of the computer-based Patient Record Institute and the electronic information security standards regarding the collection, use and retention of data mandated by the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
