Adult Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a medical field concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health conditions. A doctor who works in psychiatry is called a psychiatrist. Unlike other mental health professionals, such as psychologists and counselors, psychiatrists must be physicians who have chosen to specialize in psychiatry. This means that they can prescribe medication as well as recommend other forms of treatment. The psychiatrist at AMG Behavioral Health-Yankton is Board Certified.
Medications are used by psychiatrists in much the same way that medications are used to treat high blood pressure or diabetes. After medical and psychological evaluations, psychiatrists can prescribe medications to help treat mental disorders.  Psychiatric medications can help correct imbalances in brain chemistry that are thought to be involved in some mental disorders. Psychiatrists often use medications in combination with psychotherapy. Patients on long-term medication treatment will need to meet with their psychiatrist periodically in order to monitor the effects of medications

Our AMG Behavioral Health adult psychiatrist, treating individuals 18 and older, focuses on helping individuals in the workplace and community who are struggling with anxiety, depression, psychological and emotional stress reactions and behavioral needs and provides a variety of therapeutic strategies to reduce symptoms, improve life skills and help people regain control of their lives.
