Located in the Avera Sacred Heart Wellness Center (the second floor of the Avera Sacred Heart Rehab and Wellness Institute), our respiratory therapists are available to assist you through your rehab experience. Working together with your physician, we will provide needed therapy, emotional support and education to help you return to the highest level of independent living.
There are two board-certified pulmonologists on the Avera Sacred Heart Medical staff; Lori Hansen, MD and Michael Pietila, MD, both practicing at Yankton Medical Clinic, P.C.
Phase III – Fit for Life Program
Some of our cardiac and pulmonary rehab participants join our Phase III - Fit For Life exercise program. This program is designed to help you become more independent in your exercise program and also takes place at the ASH Wellness Center.
Staff is available to take your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level and provide medical support when needed. The staff will provide education when needed and develop an exercise program for you.
With respiratory therapists and exercise physiologists available for your questions, our goal is to help you achieve your goals. Every three months, we provide a report to your physician on how well you are doing in this program.
Phase IV Rehab/Exercise Program
This program provides the participant more freedom during their exercise program. Staff is available for questions and consultation when needed but the participant is responsible to maintain their exercise routine. Staff will monitor blood pressure once a week and obtain an oxygen level once a month. Every 6 months we provide a report to your physician on your progress in the program.
Smoking Cessation Classes and Counseling
Are you struggling with trying to stop smoking? If you are ready to stop, talk to your physician about the different resources available to help "kick" the habit. Smoking cessation classes are provided at various times in the year. Instructions will follow the American Lung Association "Freedom From Smoking" format. If you are interested in a class or more information please call 605-668-8274. Working together, we will provide the resources needed to help you "kick" the habit.
Walking Improvement Program
Do your legs cramp, hurt or feel tight when you walk? Does this leg pain discomfort go away when you stop walking? You may have peripheral vascular disease, a common problem that involves the arteries that delivers blood through your arms and legs.
The Walking Improvement Program provides effective therapy for the leg pain known as intermittent claudication. Patients should expect an improvement in how far they can walk without pain. You and your physician will determine if this progressive walking program is right for you.
